The Countess of Wessex today officially declared open the new Journalists’ Charity care home – Pickering House.
Built at a cost of £4m – the home in Dorking comprises 20 en-suite rooms for residents and has a library, gym, hairdresser’s, games room, chapel and well-stocked bar.
So far just £1.5 million of the £4 million needed to pay for the care home has been raised.
If enough cash cannot be found the charity may have to eat into its reserves and possibly reduce the hardship grants it makes of £250,000 a year to former journalists and their dependents.
