A note from the editor of The Citizen, Gloucester, to the Queen resulted in a front-page splash on Maundy Thursday relaying her best wishes to the paper’s readers.
The Queen was at Gloucester Cathedral for the traditional Maundy money ceremony.
A year ago, during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, Citizen editor Ian Mean discovered that the Queen would send “loyal greetings” to readers if asked. “At the time, the Palace was so overwhelmed with the Jubilee celebrations there was not enough time for the process, but for Maundy Thursday it worked,” he said.
“She replied with a personal letter which we reprinted on the front page of the first edition on the day of her visit.
“I was then introduced to the Queen, who remarked on the amount of pre-coverage the visit had received.”
