Reuters’ Dan Chung has been named Nikon Press Photographer of the Year 2002.
Chung’s winning portfolio was hailed by the judges as "a professional all-round job – a very strong set".
It included an anti-capitalist demonstrator in Oxford Circus, central London, who came perilously close to hitting Chung before being dragged off by his friends.
A photographer for nine years, Chung studied photography at Sheffield and then worked for the Derby Evening Telegraph and the News Team agency in Birmingham. He was also runner-up in the News Photographer award, which was won by fellow Reuters photographer Ian Waldie.
Regional Photographer of the Year was the Irish News’s Ann McManus, for five images taken in Northern Ireland which the judges said worked exceptionally well together as a set and showed a strong news content.
Tom Stoddart of Independent Photographers Group was voted Feature Photographer of the Year, with a set of pictures which ranged from coverage of the Indian earthquake to chaos on the London tube.
The Sports Photography award went to Tom Jenkins of The Guardian/
The Observer for five images, including Goran Ivanisevic winning Wimbledon, and David Beckham celebrating on the pitch.
The portfolios of all winners and runners-up will be on show at Proud Central, 5 Buckingham Street, London wc2 until 18 April. For more details, telephone 020 7839 4942.
