Cambridge News has given the Teenage Cancer Trust an early Christmas present, after a fundraising appeal reached its £1 million target this week. The News launched its appeal in November, 2007, with the hope of raising enough money to build a new specialist unit for teenagers with cancer at Addenbrookes Hospital. After reaching the target, work has now commenced on the new unit, which will open in December, 2010.
Colin Grant, editor-in chief and a trustee of the Press Relief charity, said: “When the News launched the appeal two years ago it was the most ambitious fundraising campaign we had undertaken.
“Since then, the response from our readers and the community at large has been overwhelming and we are delighted to be able to announce that the target has been reached in just two years.”
