Charlie Burgess, who stood in as media editor of The Guardian while Janine Gibson was on maternity leave, is to get the job permanently now that Gibson has been promoted.
He said: “I am very pleased to do it permanently.” He will edit Monday’s Media Guardian section.
Burgess joined The Guardian in 1977 as a sports sub. He returned, after a year at the Liverpool Daily Post, to become a sports writer and then deputy sports editor until the mid-Eighties, when he joined The Independent as sports editor.
After nine years at The Independent, where he was also managing editor and home editor, he joined the Daily Mail as a features executive.
He returned to The Guardian in 1998 where he has been assistant editor of the Saturday package and travel editor.
Gibson is now responsible for all the G3 sections.
