One thousand zombies don't rampage down Brentwood High Street every day of the week, so the Brentwood Gazette went to town on the story when this happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The zombie rampage was organised by the makers of the film Welcome to Essex, and the Brentwood Gazette itself is going to have a role in the feature.
Producers contacted the paper a couple of weeks ago to ask if journalists could mock-up a DEAD WALK headlined front page. But journalists on the Northcliffe weekly decided to go further than that and produced an eight-page souvenir pullout with last week's paper.
The supplement includes the DEAD WALK front page, to be used in the film, as well as stories based loosely on the film's plot.
The Gazette was also on hand to cover the action in the early hours of Sunday morning as 1,000 locals turned out to be transformed into zombies. Senior editor for the group Nev Wilson was in the fray himself (see pic below).
He said there have been no complaints about the zombie coverage (from religious groups for example) and early signs are that last week's edition was a good seller, with at least one High Street outlet selling out. The story has also been a big hit on the paper's website and its Facebook page. Four further pages of coverage are planned for this week's edition.
