Bill Jenkins: Mercury deputy

A former deputy editor and sports editor of The Mercury daily newspaper in Scarborough has died after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Bill Jenkins, 79, began his career on the Northern Scot weekly newspaper in Morayshire, Scotland, before joining the Evening Express, Aberdeen, in the 1950s.

In 1962 he moved to Scarborough where he worked for the Evening News and The Mercury for 25 years.

After a spell as The Mercury sports editor he became deputy editor before retiring in 1987.
