Freelance Wendy Berliner has won the 2003 Edexcel outstanding educational journalism award for work in The Guardian and Guardian Education supplement. Berliner is former education correspondent for The Guardian and education features editor at The Independent.
The judging panel, which included Independent columnist Deborah Orr and Education and Skills Select Committee chairman Barry Sheerman MP, said: “Wendy has a real gift. She’s a storyteller and brings the reader right into the subject. Her use of narrative and case studies to humanise what could be a dry subject is masterful. “She clearly writes with a passion for education.”
Runners-up Mike Baker of the BBC and freelance Stephen Hastings were picked out for special commendation. The judges added: “All the shortlisted entrants were rated extremely highly.” Berliner picked up her £2,000 prize last week at a ceremony at the London Marriott Hotel.
