BBC Radio 5 Live adds one million listeners

BBC Radio 5 Live was the big audience winner in the last quarter of 2010 according to figures published today by Radio Joint Research Ltd.

According to Rajar, which uses a survey to estimate the weekly audience reach of UK radio stations, 5 Live reached 7.1m listeners in the last quarter of the year – up from 6.1m in the same period last year.

The BBC said the stations was boosted by a strong performance from 5 Breakfast with Nicky Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty, which rose 600,000 year on year to 3.17m listeners.

BBC Radio 4 was also up year on year with 10.3 million listeners a week, compared with 9.8m a week in the same period last last year. Flagship current affairs programme Today was also up with 6.63 million listeners a week, up from from 6.1m in the same period last year.

Digital station the BBC Asian Network, which is currently under threat of closure under plans put forward in the BBC strategic review, continues to boost its listening numbers. It reached 477,000 listeners, up from 360,000 in the same period last year.

Listening for the BBC World Service was also up in the UK to 1.46m listeners, according to Rajar, compared with 1.32m in the same period last year.

The combined reach of the BBC’s local/regional stations was 9.836m in the last quarter, up 15.1 per cent year on year to 841,000 listeners a week.

In the commercial sector, Talksport was the big winner among the speech-based stations up 24 per cent year on year to 3.1m listeners a week.

London-based talk station LBC 97.3 also had a successful quarter, up 15.1 per cent to 968,000. BBC London 94.9 also rose , up 13.3 per cent to 502,000 listeners a week.

Overall, Rajar estimates that 90.5 per cent of Britons, or 46.7m people, aged 15 and over tune in to their radio at least once a week
