Liverpool Echo sports writer Chris Bascombe has won the Merseyside Journalist of the Year award.
He received his accolade from Bill Kenwright, guest of honour at the Merseyside Media Network Journalism Awards. Bascombe also won the Sports Journalist of the Year category.
Echo journalists Greg O'Keefe and Jason Roberts claimed Scoop of the Year and Photo-Journalist of the Year respectively, while the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo's Kate Mansey and Adrian Butler were joint winners of the Newcomer of the Year prize with Amber Tan of Mercury Press and Laura Finn, BBC Radio Merseyside.
Special jade plaques were presented to Kenwright for services to entertainment, arts and soccer, comedian Stan Boardman for services to comedy, and Peter Grant, the Echo features writer, for services to journalism and the arts.
Other category winners included: News Journalist — Andy Kelly and Jessica Shaughnessy, Liverpool Daily Post; Features Journalist — David Charters, Liverpool Daily Post; Broadcaster — Radio City Team and Andy Gill, BBC North West Tonight.
Freelance — Andy Swanson, Mercury Press; Business — Sophie Freeman, Liverpool Daily Post and Andy Gill, BBC North West Tonight; Designer — Colin Sumpter, Sportsmedia; Student — Angela Johnson, Community College; Special commendations — BBC Radio Merseyside team, Radio City Team.
Winners of the Barrel of Laughs award, endorsed by Cains Brewery, were: Andy Bonner, Granada Reports, Steve Shakeshaft, Paddy Shennan and Luke Traynor, Liverpool Echo; David Charters, Liverpool Daily Post.
Money raised through the event, sponsored by Littlewoods Shop Direct Group, will be shared between the sponsor's chosen charities, which include Alder Hey Childrens' Hospital, the Weston Spirit and the Journalists' Charity.
