Nick Davies (“Factory-style news will kill off skilled reporters”
Press Gazette, 4 March) laments the fact that reporters are no longer
sent out to trudge the streets in search of a story.
Yet he
criticises training courses for not teaching the skills. He can’t have
it both ways. Either we teach it and it’s wasted. Or editors, somehow,
get back to basics, according to him. He should criticise the
newspapers for not sending out reporters to gather news which, if true,
does fall short of good journalism.
This could be down to a number of reasons, not least a lack of staff.
