Architects' Journal editor Isabel Allen has resigned to return to architecture after 11 years in publishing.
Allen, a qualified architect, is leaving to become design director for Happiness Architecture Beauty (Hab) — a project of Channel 4 Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud —dedicated to building sustainable housing.
Editor of Architects' Journal for seven years, Allen had overseen a major redesign of the flagship Emap b2b title in 2005.
She subsequently won a string of awards last year, including PPA editor of the year and BSME editor of the year. She is also a judge on the Stirling Prize for architecture. Emap Construct managing director Ben Greenish said: "Isabel's success over the past number of years has culminated in her thinking about her future, her position as a professional architect in the world of media and making a decision on which particular path she wanted to go on."
Both Allen and Architects' Journal news editor Edward Dorrell resigned last Wednesday — though Greenish said that Dorrell was unaware of Allen's decision. Dorrell is leaving to take up a news editor position at New Media Age.
As to a future editor, Greenish said: "Architect's Journal is such an unique proposition — there is plenty of talent around Emap, eminently employable as media people, but we need to find that very unique person who is qualified to engage in the architectural world."
