Former Scottish Sun journalist Cliff Renfrew is now working for Star Magazine, published by American Media. He had been helping run showbiz photo agency Whitebronco when the company approached him at the end of last year.
Since joining, he has secured an interview with singer Shakira, helped cover the Shuttle disaster and worked on Michael Jackson stories.
At the moment there is a tabloid battle in the US with American Media’s titles competing with US Weekly, People and latest celeb-driven title In Touch.
Renfrew, 34, said: “It’s been very hectic and the competition is fierce in the American market right now. But I’m working with a good bunch of people, including several Brits, which has been very helpful.
“Tony Frost [former Mirror and Sunday Sun executive] has just been reappointed editor at the Star and he’s been encouraging us to go out and get the best stories that we can. With the Oscars upon us things are about to really heat up.”
Renfrew is in the company’s bureau in Santa Monica, which has around 20 journalists, who also work for The Globe and The National Enquirer.
