71-year-old in NoW phone-hack probe arrest

A 71-year-old man has been arrested by officers from Scotland Yard investigating allegations of phone-hacking and payments to police by the News of the World.

The man was arrested by appointment at a north London police station this morning by officers from Operation Weeting, the unit set up to investigate phone-hacking, and Operation Elveden, which is investigating claims of press payments to police

The Met is refusing to identity the man, and NoW publishers News International declined to comment.

A statement from the Met said: “At 10:50hrs on Tuesday, 2 August officers from Operation Weeting together with officers from Operation Elveden arrested a man on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications, contrary to Section1(1) Criminal Law Act 1977 and on suspicion of corruption allegations contrary to Section 1 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906.”
