WMN readers petition No 10

By Press Gazette

A petition signed by 66,000 Western Morning News readers demanding an end to the live export of horses for slaughter has been handed in to No 10 by wildlife campaigner Carla Lane.

Lane presented the petition on Monday, accompanied by supporters of Compassion in World Farming. The handover was recorded for a four-page special in Tuesday’s WMN by reporter Sarah Pitt and photographer Richard Austin.

The petition calls for the Government to close a loophole in EU law to protect British horses and donkeys from being exported to the continent for the meat market.

WMN editor Barrie Williams said: “For almost 66,000 people to sign our petition is just amazing – and it has produced more letters than I’ve seen on any subject in my entire career.”
