US reporter appeals against spy conviction in Iranian court

A lawyer for a jailed American journalist in Iran has said he is optimistic there will be a change in her verdict after her brief appeals hearing.

Roxana Saberi's lawyer said he was allowed to defend his client at her hearing yesterday and expects the court will make its decision in a few days.

Abdolsamad Khorramshahi also said the court atmosphere was "favourable".

Saberi, a 32-year-old dual Iranian-American national, was convicted last month of spying for the US and sentenced to eight years in prison. The US has called the charges against her baseless.

Iran had promised a review of the case at her appeal.
