Will Whittow make an ass of himself again?

The current Daily Express campaign to save the stricken donkeys of the Greek island of Santorini has reminded Axegrinder of the huge battle between The Sun and The Star in the Eighties to save Blackie the Spanish donkey.

Top teams were assigned by both papers to find the donkey and return him to a sanctuary in the UK.

The Star’s Don McKay won by sneaking the donkey over the border. The Sun retaliated by saving another donkey and printing a list of 10 reasons why Blackie should remain in Spain. One of them was that he didn’t understand English.

And who was the mastermind of The Sun’s failed operation? Step forward Hugh Whittow – now deputy editor of the Daily Express.
