Web designer’s image used around the world

Germany’s Spiegel Online has an interview today with René Werse, the 43-year-old web designer and sports photographer who took the picture of the baby falling to safety from the third floor of a burning builing.

Eight people died in the inferno in Ludwigshafen, Germany, including five children. But the falling toddler was saved when it was caught by a policeman on the ground.

The dramatic picture, which has been in newspaers from Canada to Australia today, including nearly all of the British nationals. Some of the them credit the photographer only as “a witness”.

Werse happend on the burning building on his way home after covering last night’s carnival procession which had just passed through the centre of the town in southern Germany, Spiegel Online reports.
