UK launch for first free men’s sport weekly

By Press Gazette

Sport Media and Strategy are claiming to be the first publisher in
the UK to launch a free weekly stand-alone magazine for men with the
publication of Sport.

Sport is already the leading male
magazine in France, after being launched in Paris in March 2004 and was
profitable after 20 months, according to the team behind the title.

The
UK launch is backed by £7 million and the magazine, featuring sport and
lifestyle, will target upmarket 18-40 year old males. An initial London
launch of 350,000 copies will be followed by a national roll-out within
the first six months.

Greg Miall is the UK Publishing Director
and was previously at Metro International for four and a half years,
most recently as their Director of Global Sales.

Simon Caney is
the editor-in-chief of ‘Sport’. Caney was previously editor of Golf
Weekly and MATCH magazines, in addition to working on the launch of Zoo
Weekly in Australia.

The first issue of Sport will be distributed on 29 September.
