TV news under the microscope

By Gavin Bradshaw

British television journalists are under scrutiny in the world’s largest research project into TV news.

The project, funded by the Australian Research Council, looks at the
changing nature of TV journalism in Australia, US, UK, India, Singapore
and South Africa.

The research in the UK is led by consultant
Alan Geere, who runs the undergraduate journalism programme at the
University of Westminster. He has interviewed news executives,
presenters and reporters at the major news networks.

“There have
been many studies on the output of TV news, but this project looks at
who makes the decisions in the newsroom and why the news ends up
looking like it does,” said Geere.

Some 10,000 news and current
affairs items have already been collected by researchers at the
University of Melbourne, who are leading the project.
