Tindle Newspapers’ managing director Brian Doel has revealed that
the company’s strategy for growth will focus on launches rather than
acquisitions, writes Zoe Smith.
His announcement came as the group celebrated the launch of its 210th publication, the Kingsteignton Advertiser.
“There
are fewer and fewer independently owned newspapers in Britain and I
think the new ones will be coming from launches rather than
acquisitions,”
said Doel.
The new paper covers a large part
of the Newton Abbot patch, but many news pages will focus solely on
Kingsteignton, so that the village has its own community paper. The
Advertiser uses the same team that produces the Mid-Devon Advertiser
series.
Pointing out the benefits of being a small newspaper,
Doel said: “Whereas some big titles are hit by the recession, many of
our newspapers are 20 per cent up on last year in terms of profits.”
