Turner Prize nominees and controversial Brit Art duo the Chapman brothers have designed an exclusive cover for Time Out based on the theme of “the nightmare before Christmas”.
Jake and Dino Chapman, who were tipped as the hot favourites to win this year’s Turner Prize, designed the cover before they were beaten to the post by transvestite potter Grayson Perry on Sunday. It features an alternative Christmas scene in their recent style inspired by Goya.
Time Out art editor Sarah Kent approached the pair with the idea.
She said: “The Chapman brothers always manage to surprise.
Who would have thought that their famous sculpture of dismembered bodies hung on a tree could become a Christmas scene? “The tree has been hung with shiny baubles, which turns the corpses into Christmas tree decorations – admired by a smiling snowman.”
Meanwhile, Time Out is expanding in the US and is about to launch an edition in Chicago.
Cyndi Stivers, editorial director of Time Out in New York, said Chicago would be a tougher market than New York as there are already several publications, including a 32-year-old weekly called The Chicago Reader.
Time Out founder Tony Elliot is believed to be considering Singapore, Hong Kong and São Paulo for his next ventures.
