Time fights $100m Suharto libel ruling

By Press Gazette

Time magazine has vowed to fight an Indonesian Supreme Court ruling which ordered it to pay $100 million in damages to to former president former President Suharto.

Time printed, in their May 1999 Asia edition, allegations about huge wealth accumulated by Suharto and his family.

Time lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis said: “What is at stake here is not only Time but also the freedom of the press,” adding that he and the magazine had not been notified formally of the verdict.

He said that the US weekly would use “all means available to challenge this decision”.
