Telegraph wins Harry scoop

By Press Gazette

Local contacts paid off for the Coventry Evening Telegraph when Prince Harry paid a surprise trip to coach Coventry schoolkids this week at rugby.

Thanks to the paper’s close relationship with Coventry Rugby Club, the Evening Telegraph was brought in on the top secret visit and beat the nationals with front page pictures and a splash on Tuesday.

Prince Harry was drafted in to help training at the rugby club as one of the activities in his gap year.

The paper agreed to take pictures from a distance and came to a special arrangement with the Royal press office not to release the pictures to any other source.

Editor Alan Kirby said: “It was all achieved thanks to our brilliant local contacts and our long-standing relationship with the rugby club.”
