The Swindon Evening Advertiser has been trying to boost the town’s image with a campaign headlined “Swindon and Proud of it”.
The move comes after fashion designer Wayne Hemingway said some of the town’s new estates were “jaw-droppingly bad”.
An
Advertiser spokesman said: “Swindon is often the butt of jokes and
somewhere along the line it became a byword for rubbish towns with
programmes like The Office using it to comedy effect. The spirit of the
initiative is not outrage, but a light-hearted bid to focus on the
positive aspects of the town.”
Readers have been asked to sign a
pledge card to register their support and to send in letters and poems
explaining what they like about Swindon.
