Sunderland Echo claims 173 per cent web traffic growth

By Martin Stabe wirepost

The Sunderland Echo website claims it was read by 216,000 unique users in January, a 173 per cent year-on-year increase.

According to the paper, the the site was read by just 79,000 uniques in January 2007, but breached 200,000 users for the first time last month.

Digital editor Lee Hall told his own paper: “More and more people are logging on because we’re publishing news fast and first – from traffic chaos as it happens, to Saturday’s match reports, filed when the players are still in the team bath.”

The Johnston Press-owned site uses audio slideshows, videos, and podcasts and all articles can be commented on. Hall said improving interactivity and user-generated content is the site’s major target for the coming year.
