Suits you, Sir

There’s much chat about the wearing of a suit and tie in the office on blogs like Playing the Game and Fleet Street Blues.

The desirability (and benefits) for those in direct contact with the public are clear. Back of house, however, has become remarkably casual in recent years, and a tie is now a rare sight in many publishing offices. But is the tide about to turn?

I hear that the Daily Express has summoned its male columnists and writers to Lower Thames Street to have new byline pictures taken, with the instruction to ‘wear a tie, please”. Is Dirty Desmond’s plaything on the move upmarket? Or has he just anticipated an era of new austerity, as we cast off childish things and knuckle down under the cash-strapped Tories?
