Student journalists predict planet's future in newspaper supplement

A group of eco-conscious students from University College Falmouth have teamed up with a local newspaper to bring residents an evocative glimpse of the not-too-distant future.

The 2 May 2057 edition of the Packet was included as a supplement to the paper, along with a warning about the fictional nature of the issue.

Daily malaria tablets and radiation graded food, refugees scouring the world's seas for a welcoming harbour and cyclones off the Scilly Isles, were all on the supplement's agenda.

Readers were shown a planet transformed by climate change, where foods are graded depending on the amount of fallout radiation they contain and overweight citizens are plugged into Matrix style energy farms.

Terry Lambert, group editor of Packet newspapers, part of Newsquest, said: "It was an inspired idea, and the University College team has done a wonderful job".

The special Climate Change edition can be seen at www.thepacket.co.uk.
