Popbitch pays libel damages to Hotel Babylon actor

17 March 2008

Hotel Babylon star Max Beesley today accepted a formal apology and "substantial" damages from gossip website Popbitch at London's High Court.

The actor sued after Popbitch Ltd claimed in its weekly celebrity gossip e-mail to members that he had lined up three women for sex at a TV industry party in Cannes.

In the 11 October issue of the e-mail, which is sent to roughly 360,000 people, it was also claimed that Beesley told one woman who had turned him down to go away so he could find someone else.

His solicitor, Jenny Afia, told judge Mr Justice Eady at London's High Court today: "This story was totally untrue.

"The defendant now accepts that the allegations are totally untrue. It has agreed to publish an apology in its forthcoming weekly mail out, not to repeat the allegations and to pay a substantial sum by way of damages to the claimant together with his legal costs."

Charles Russell, for Popbitch, added: "The defendant through me sincerely apologises for the embarrassment caused by the defamatory article, which it fully accepts is false."
