News of the World eschews 'celebs misbehaving'

News of the World editor Colin Myler has hinted that he is in favour of the paper pursuing a less celebrity-driven news agenda in the wake of the Clive Goodman Royal phone-tapping scandal.

Speaking at the Society of Editors conference, Myler said: "I personally believe that stories about celebrities misbehaving and taking drugs, that's a surprise isn't it?

"I think there are other issues out there he should be looking at - issues that affect our daily life and society. I think you will be seeing a bit more of that in the future."

He singled out the paper's investigations editor Mazher Mahmood, infamous for his fake sheikh stings, for special praise. Mahmood's work has been less evident in the NoW under Myler's editorship, but Myler praised the 230 criminal convictions he has secured.
