Archive boost for Splash

26 October 2007

Brit-owned US celeb news agency Splash News celebrated massively increasing its web video archive by sending Press Gazette a couple of examples of the wares on display.

Splash has bought the Kaplan archive – which includes footage of former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan cycling shirtless on Santa Monica Beach (above). Apparently he was recorded shouting a challenge to muscle-bound Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey (inset): “Watch out, I am out to top you.”

The Kaplan archive includes 4,000 videos compiled by Gary and Rachelle Kaplan since 1994. Splash proprietor Kevin Smith said: “Video is the great buzz word in our industry now, with publications waking up to the potential of moving footage on their websites.

“Splash generates between 20 and 60 video clips a day, but our library was sorely lacking depth. Kaplan fills that void.”

Digitising the tapes so they are all keyworded and uploaded to Splash-Video.com will take two months.
