Alan Johnston wins Amnesty radio journalism award

5 July 2007

BBC correspondent Alan Johnston has won the Amnesty International Media Award for radio.

The journalist’s first award since his release on Tuesday was collected by his parents Graham and Margaret Johnston collected the award on his behalf at a ceremony in London last night.

Earlier in the day, they had arrived at Bush House, the BBC World Service headquarters, to loud applause.

At a press conference in Jerusalem, Johnston said he was "destroyed" watching footage of his elderly parents making a plea on Arabic television for his release.

"I couldn't believe I was putting them through that," he said.

Johnston won the radio gong for his Dispatches from Gaza broadcasts on BBC News. The awards recognise excellence in human rights reporting and acknowledge journalism’s significant contribution to the UK public’s awareness and understanding of human rights issues.

In May, during his 114-day captivity in Gaza, Johnston was named the Broadcast Journalist of The Year at the annual London Press Awards.
