Shortlist up for five Independent Publisher Awards

Free weekly men’s magazine, Shortlist, is leading the way with five nominations in this year’s Independent Publisher Awards.

Mike Soutar’s publishing venture, Shortlist Media, was nominated for best launch and consumer magazine of the year. The title’s designer Matt Phare was shortlisted for designer of the year and Phil Hilton for editor of the year. Soutar himself was nominated for individual achievement of the year.

The awards, part of the Periodial Publisher Association’s Magazines 2008 conference, also saw a 21-year-old university dropout-turned-publisher shortlisted in two categories. Owen Hunnam is the youngest-ever entrant to be shortlisted in any PPA awards.

Hunnam’s publication, Vine, is a 15,000 circulation Sevenoaks-focused community lifestyle magazine, and was nominated for best launch and the individual achievement award.

The PPA said that overall entries were up 78 per cent, with 33 publishing companies fighting it out to win one of the ten awards.

Jane Salliss, IPA coordinator, said: ‘The judges were impressed this year with the quality and diversity of entries. I think even those judges from the bigger publishing companies learnt something today from the independent publishers.’

The winners will be announced at the Independent Publisher Awards lunch on 6 May, following the independent publishers seminar at Magazines 2008.
