I read your British Press Awards supplement with increasing disbelief.
Many
of the so-called scoops were acquired through payment or calculated
leaks motivated purely for political manipulation of the media.
Sensational stories of sex scandals and celebrities dominated the roll call of winners.
I
have been a reporter on five national newspapers, and for BBC
Newsnight, for 18 years, with 10 years in the regional press before
that.
I am now a freelance journalist and lecturer in journalism at City University.
What am I to tell my students about the standards of journalism required to succeed, as judged by the British Press Awards 2005?
