Prompt cards aid court challengers

Regional newspaper publisher Trinity Mirror is urging its reporters to challenge the courts by equipping them with credit card size guides.

The laminated challenge cards include tips on what to say if you are excluded from a court, what to do when laws aimed at protecting children are used to cover adult defendants and how to challenge gagging orders. They’ve been produced by TM’s editorial training tutor David Banks.

“Quite often courts are misusing statutes to prevent the press from doing its job,” he said. “The card ensures that reporters have at their fingertips, the information they need to persuade the court it’s in the wrong.”

The cards are available to buy by non-TM staff by calling 0191 201 6043.
