Western Mail’s award-winning columnist Elaine Morgan retires at 92

By Andrew Pugh

The Western Mail’s award-winning columnist Elaine Morgan has announced her retirement at the age of 92.

Morgan, who was named Columnist of the Year at last year’s Regional Press Awards, first began writing a weekly column for the Welsh daily 10 years ago.

After suffering a series of strokes over the past few months Morgan has decided to call time on her column.

“Some of you will recall that I spent a few months in hospital earlier this year after having a couple of strokes,” she told readers today.

“I don’t remember much about that time but, at 92, I find there are quite a few things I don’t remember.

“One thing I keep forgetting to do is retire, so I’m going to put that right as soon as I finish writing this.

“I owe the Western Mail and WalesOnline a debt of gratitude for giving me a chance to air my views on all kinds of topics, even when my opinions have been unpopular and sometimes, no doubt, mistaken.”

Morgan rose to prominence as a playwright in the 1950s and 1960s and later wrote extensively for television, winning multiple BAFTA and Writers' Guild awards.

In her final column she revealed the BBC will be profiling her in a new series on ‘Great Welsh Writers’ in the spring.

She added: “I haven’t really got the hang of retirement yet, but I take it to mean, at least partly, that instead of trying to tell the world how to run itself on more reasonable lines, I will try to do the same for myself.”

On Twitter the editor of the Daily Post, Alison Gow, described Morgan as an “amazing woman, amazing writer”.

Wales Online editor Ceri Gould Thomas said Morgan was an “incredible woman”.
