Sunday People reports traffic surge after exclusive interview with father of Indian rape victim

By Andrew Pugh

The Sunday People claimed a world exclusive yesterday when it published an interview with the father of a gang rape victim in India.

With permission from her father, the paper was the first to name Jyoti Singh Pandey as the victim of a brutal crime that led to uproar in India and mass demonstrations in support of women's rights and tougher rape laws.

Her 53-year-old father Badri told the paper: “We want the world to know her real name.

“My daughter didn’t do anything wrong, she died while protecting herself.

“I am proud of her. Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks. They will find strength from my daughter.”

The Sunday People’s interview was quickly picked up by rival outlets and has been retweeted almost 9,000 times.

It also received 39,000 ‘likes’ on Facebook and attracted 535,000 'hits' yesterday.

Bardi told Sunday People: “I so desperately wanted her to survive, even though she would have to live with a memory of that attack, and get through her trauma.

“We’re so devastated that she’s gone. There’s a huge void in our lives. She was the centre of our universe. Our lives revolved around her.

“Her absence is so painful, a future without her is unimaginable.”

Five men appeared at a pre-trial hearing today accused of gang rape and murder. Proceedings were held ‘in camera’ with the media excluded from proceedings.
