BSME Awards 2012 – full list of winners: Double win for Giles Barrie as he leaves for PR role

By William Turvill

Property Week editor Giles Barrie was a double winner at last night's BSME awards, claiming an editor of the year prize and a campaigns award.

He picked up the prize in the same week that he announced he is leaving Property Week after 10 years as editor to join communications company FTI Consulting.

Barrie won editor of the year in the Business and Professional Magazines (weekly) category and his magazine was also recognised for its campaign, 'UBM Built Environment, for Site Life'.

He tweeted on the night:

Publishing on the open web is broken, how generative AI could help fix it

Speaking to Press Gazette last week, Barrie explained his decision to leave the UBM title saying: "I've been a hack for 25 years and an editor for 10 years and there comes a time when you want to do something different."

Barrie said he felt he had taken Property Week from being number two in its market to being on a par with rival title Estates Gazette. He said he was also pleased at the number of Property Week journalists who had gone on to national press careers and felt he had completed the title's transformation from magazine to multi-platform brand.

Last month his number two on the title, executive editor James Whitmore, announced he was leaving to join PR firm Tavistock.

Editors' editor of the year went to Cosmopolitan editor Louise Court, also highly commended in the Women's Magazines (monthly or less frequent) editor of the year award.

Kitty Finstead, BSME chair and group editor, August Media, said: “It’s been a fantastic year for magazines, with editors embracing new platforms and consistently raising the editorial bar for their readers.

"This year’s awards recognise the phenomenal skill and influence of the best of British talent.”
