BBC Magazines has appointed Olwyn Price, former editor of Woman’s Weekly, to edit a new customer title for Tesco Personal Finance.
The corporation is hoping to expand its portfolio of customer magazines with the launch in November of On The Road. The title will have a print run of more than 350,000 and be distributed quarterly via cafés in Tesco stores and in petrol stations.
Designed to raise awareness of Tesco’s products and services, such as motor insurance, it will have a lifestyle element as well as features on drivingrelated issues and celebrity interviews.
Price has recently been working as a freelance consultant on magazine projects for Cedar Communications and Redwood Publishing. She remains a contributor to Woman’s Weekly, which she edited for five years until 1998, having also edited its sister title at IPC, Living. Olwyn said she was still in the process of recruiting an editorial team.
BBC Magazines managing director Peter Phippen said: “We have ambitious plans to increase our presence in the customer magazine marketplace. As the third largest consumer magazine publisher, and one of the fastest growing, we have the knowledge and expertise to produce excellent magazines for those partners with whom we have particular empathy or share a cultural synergy.”
The move follows the launch in June of About the House magazine, which is produced by the BBC on behalf of the Royal Opera House.
BBC Magazines also produces a monthly title for London’s South Bank arts complex.
