Nils Pratley, who is currently a business columnist for The Sunday Times and a former editor of Sunday Business, is to join The Guardian as associate City editor.
Pratley, above, who also edited TheStreet.co.uk, will write on all sectors, concentrating on features and analysis.
Paul Murphy, financial editor of The Guardian, said: “Nils is one of the very best business writers around and we are very proud to have tempted him back.
“While the quality and breadth of The Guardian’s business and economic coverage has improved dramatically over the past few years, we have ambitious plans to make the subject even more relevant and accessible to all our readers.
“The qualities Nils brings – in terms of commentary, analysis, writing and raw experience – will put us another step ahead of our rivals.”
Pratley added: “I’m delighted to be returning to The Guardian. I spent only a couple of months there last summer, but it was long enough to know it’s a place where robust and challenging journalism is alive and well. I look forward to contributing to as many parts of the paper as possible.”
