The Press Complaints Commission was branded a “poodle of the employers” by executive committee member Chris Frost.
He said the NUJ had had no truck with the PCC since its formation but told the conference that new super-regulator Ofcom was not a credible alternative.
Delegates backed a motion calling for the setting up of an independent press freedom commission, charged with making recommendations to Parliament on measures to improve press freedom as well as a new statutory system of redress for complainants.
Conference also called on the Government to outlaw press payments to witnesses in trials, rather than accept changes to the Editors’ Code. Frost said: “This is the only way to ensure it is stamped out.”
