The Hereford Times has won the right to attend training sessions for Herefordshire Council members after it was controversially turned away from a meeting last month.
Reporter Ian Morris had turned up to report on a session discussing the area’s flood defences – a topic the paper had covered intensively – only to be told he could not sit in.
Council leader Roger Phillips insisted there were times when confidential items had to be discussed without the press and public being present.
However, this week he said he was happy for the media to attend, but added that the council would rely on the integrity of the media to handle confidential and sensitive material appropriately.
Hereford Times editor Liz Griffin said: “I’m delighted this assurance has been given by Councillor Phillips. We are often privy to confidential and sensitive information and our judgements on what and how to publish are made within our editorial codes of conduct.”
