The NUJ‘s treasurer has denied that the union is in the midst of a financial crisis.
Anita Halpin told the union’s Annual Delegates’ Meeting last weekend that the union was facing a ‘difficult financial situation’and was still spending more than it raised.
‘The first thing to say is that this does not mean we should withdraw to the barracks and be budget-driven,’she said.
The union is facing a deficit of nearly £88,000 – three times higher than the previous financial year – mainly due to redundancies across the industry that has seen a £112,000 shortfall in subscriptions and a net loss of 226 members in the 2006/7 financial year.
