Herald Group publisher Newsquest could be forced to pay out £2m to staff in breach-of-contract compensation over its handling of a recent staff reorganisation, according to AllMediaScotland.com.
National Union of Journalists Scotland national organiser Paul Holleran has contacted all members at the Herald Group to say that the union is proceeding with legal action and giving members the chance to opt out of the claim.
All but a few of the 250 staff at Newsquest’s Glasgow titles were made redundant in December last year and told to reapply for 210 available jobs.
Holleran told Press Gazette that existing contracts had been scrapped and new ones drawn up with “much worse terms”.
The NUJ believes members working at The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times newspapers could be entitled to between £5,000 and £10,000 each from the publisher.
