Riots spur Guardian.co.uk to daily traffic record of 5.6m

The Guardian is claiming to have achieved a new daily website traffic record on Tuesday fuelled by coverage of riots across England.

The site has been covering the looting, arson and violence which spread from London across England this week with a variety of live blogs, video and news reports.

According to unaudited figures released by Guardian News and Media, 5.6m website users logged on to Guardian.co.uk on Tuesday. This compares with a previous one day traffic record for the site of 4.56m earlier this year when the US government announced the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

According to GNM, some 803,000 readers used the mobile-phone version of Guardian.co.uk on Tuesday, up from the previous daily record of 580,409. Some 5.5m unique browsers are said to have viewed riot-related content this week.
