East London Advertiser's Ted Jeory joins Sunday Express

The East London Advertiser's deputy editor and reigning Regional Press Awards weekly reporter of the year Ted Jeory is leaving the paper after three years to join the Sunday Express as a reporter.

Jeory, 38, began his journalism career on Archant's East Anglian Daily Times in 2003 after nine years as a City accountant.

He joined the Advertiser in 2005, shortly after its current editor Malcom Starbrook, and has been freelancing for the Sunday Express for four years working every Saturday and manning the night newsdesk once a month.

Jeory said he was offered the chance to join the national three years ago, but was enjoying his patch on the Advertiser too much.

He said: 'I had just started at the Advertiser and I was getting my teeth into the patch here and was enjoying it too much. I felt I had a lot of work to do at the Advertiser."

Jeory said he hoped to continue to cover ongoing issues in the area at the Sunday Express, including working as a correspondent for the 2012 Olympics, which take place in the area.

'I'll also be building on other issues in Tower Hamlets in an investigative role, and some work out of Whitehall. It will be a new experience and good fun I hope," he said.

Jeory said the Sunday Express was keen to put his financial background to good use, although he was not tempted to take advantage of the current economic crisis and move towards a career as a corporate financial journalist.

He said: 'When I gave up the career to go into journalism people always asked why I didn't go into financial journalism, and I thought that if I wanted to be inside that environment I wouldn't have changed careers and would have been on a lot more money.

"But any of the scandal where there's a bit of investigating to be done, that really tickles me."
