Iranian reporter Ali Akrami is the ninth journalist to have been detained in Iran in the past few weeks following student demonstrations in the country, according to Reporters Without Borders.

Auton joins board

IPC Media chief executive Sylvia Auton has joined the board of the Periodical Publishers Association. PPA chairman and Reed Business Information chief executive Keith Jones said: "I am delighted to welcome business leaders of her stature to join our discussions."

Magazine launch

InCirculation, a magazine focusing on marketing, circulation and distribution matters for newspapers and magazines, will launch this autumn. A bimonthly, it will be free to registered readers.

Ad spend up again

The regional press increased its share of UK advertising spending to 21 per cent last year, a total of £2.87bn, according to the Advertising Association Yearbook. The yearbook, published this week, predicts regional press ad spend will increase to £2.98bn for 2003, making local papers the only medium to increase ad spend every year for the past decade.

Mortgage misery

George Dodds, managing director of Homebank Mortgages plc of Northampton, has issued proceedings for libel against the publisher of Mortgage Introducer, its editor Rob Griffiths and journalist Victoria Hartley. The action relates to an article published in Mortgage Introducer on 22 March.

Fly Reuters

News agency Reuters has claimed access to an extra 9.3m customers following a deal with JC Decaux Airport. Reuters is to display news photos and stories on the LED advertising screen at Heathrow's Terminal One departures area.
