News of the World settles Kate Moss ‘affair’ libel case

By Press Gazette

Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie and his girlfriend, Katie England, have accepted a public apology at the High Court and undisclosed libel damages over a News of the World article linking Gillespie with supermodel Kate Moss.

Gerrard Tyrrel, for Gillespie and England, told the court the article on 25 January this year, headed “It Moss be Love”, indicated that Gillespie had split up with England, was being comforted by Moss and had admitted he was “smitten” with the supermodel.

“Any reader of this article would have been left with the false and unfounded impression that Mr Gillespie had been betraying his longterm girlfriend, Ms England, by conducting an affair with Kate Moss,” said Tyrrel.

He said they were both good and long-standing friends of Moss. A photograph used with the article gave the impression that the photographer had caught Gillespie and Moss alone and holding hands.

“In fact, the photograph was of Bobby Gillespie and Katie England holding hands, with Kate Moss in the foreground,” he said.

Tyrrel told the judge the News of the World now acknowledged the article was incorrect and had apologised unconditionally to the couple and agreed to pay them damages and their legal costs.
