New app allows readers to pay for Mirror titles in newsagents with their mobile phone

By Alan Selby

Trinity Mirror has launched a free app which allows readers to buy newspapers via their mobile phone.

The pilot of the free PaperPay app for iPhone and Android was launched this morning. It enables users to pay for The Daily and Sunday Mirror in advance, and then use a barcode on their phone to buy papers in newsagents, rather than with cash.

Trinity Mirror says the service can be used in more than 47,000 newsagents that have PayPoint or Payzone technology. As well as a pay as you go service, weekly, monthly and annual subscriptions can be purchased.

The Mirror reports today that advantages of the new app include "no more fumbling around for cash", a lower price for subscribers, and regular reader offers.

Matt Colebourne, Trinity Mirror's new business director, said: "PaperPay is convenient for the consumer and retailer alike. The consumer can enjoy their daily paper, as usual, pay for it in a hassle-free way and make significant savings over time; the retailer receives full cover price direct to their bank account. It's convenient, secure and simple."

People who download the app before 25 April will receive five free issues. Trinity Mirror has said it plans to roll the app out across its other titles once the pilot scheme has been completed, and eventually to allow other publishers to use the PaperPay platform.
