Murdoch confirms plans to charge for online content

By paulmcnally

Rupert Murdoch has confirmed reports that News Corp is looking at putting parts of its newspaper websites behind a paywall within the next year.

The Daily Beast said on Tuesday that Murdoch had set up global team in New York, London and Sydney to create a system of paid content.

In a conference call with journalists and analysts to coincide with News Corp’s Q3 results, Murdoch said the current model for online content was “malfunctioning”.

“That it is possible to charge for content on the web is obvious from the Wall Street Journal’s experience,” he said.

“We’re absolutely looking at that [charging for online]. The current days of the internet will soon be over.”
